Fun Practice Ideas
Mix up the order and turn over one at a time, have your child point first to the first letter of the word, make that sound THEN say the word!
  • Put all cards face down and play Concentration turning over 2 cards, reading them, and taking them if they match!
  • Choose 2 or 3 words to focus on for the evening. Pull out those cards and then notice them in the nightly reading!
  • Choose 2 or 3 words to focus on. Pull out those word cards and have your child highlight those words in a section of newspaper!
  • Make a BINGO board with the words and play BINGO as a family!
  • Have your child read the word with you, then s/he makes up a sentence using that word!
  • Play “Oops!” Have all cards face-up. YOU make up a sentence leaving OUT one of these words and your child tries to guess which one you “forgot”!
  • Play “Mind Reader!” Turn all words face up on a table and read them together. Give your child some paper with 5 numbered lines for them to write on. Then tell your child, “I want you to read my mind and see if you can figure out what word I’m thinking of.” Begin with this clue: “This is one of the words you are learning to read this week.” Your child writes and reads to you one of the words.” Keep giving clues until your child finally guesses the right one!
  • Play “Go Fish” with the cards!
  • PowerPoint Creation! Create a PowerPoint Slideshow with one word per slide -> Slide Show -> Record Narration -> wait a couple of seconds on each slide and say the word -> play it! The great part about this is that you can mix up the order in slide sorter view and the recording of the word goes with it.
